Small things that matter
A door that drags, a key that needs a jiggle, a fob that works from closer than it used to. Each is a small signal worth understanding. Our advice pages explain what those signals mean and how to act on them before they become a lockout.

Questions people ask us

Lockout Services
Can you get me in if my smart lock has died?
Yes, usually. Backup access on a keypad or app-controlled deadbolt depends on the model. Many carry small external terminals that wake the lock when a fresh nine-volt battery is touched to them, long enough to enter your code; some also keep a conventional keyed override behind a cover, which a locksmith can pick or decode like any other cylinder, while other current models have no cylinder at all and rely only on their own recovery method. Once inside, the batteries are replaced and your codes are checked. Home Lockout Service
An employee left and never returned their keys. Should we rekey?
It is the sensible step, and a lockout visit is a convenient moment for it. Rekeying keeps your existing cylinders and changes the pins so a new key operates them and the unreturned one does nothing. If your doors use interchangeable cores, swapping the core takes minutes. Bring every door that shared the old key onto the new one, count the fresh keys into named hands and start a register so the next departure is a line in a book rather than a call. How do I stop keys breaking in future?
Look after the lock and the key ages slowly. Keep the cylinder lubricated with the product its maker specifies and free of grit, and have a binding door adjusted, since resistance raises the risk, though a worn, bent or fatigued key can still fail under normal use. Retire copies that have gone thin or kinked instead of straightening them. Cut spares from code, and rotate them so one key is not doing all the work. Take the ring weight off a car key. Small habits, but they add years. Broken Key Extraction
Should I upgrade to a stronger deadbolt while you are here?
It is the natural moment, because the door is already open for repair. A deadbolt with a full one-inch throw, a hardened insert against sawing and a low-profile face that resists a wrench grip, graded to a recognised durability standard, takes little extra effort to fit now compared with a return visit. Pair it with the reinforced strike and long screws and the door becomes hard to attack from any side. The choice is yours; the locksmith shows the options and lets you decide. Change or Rekey Locks
How often should locks be rekeyed?
There is no calendar for it. What matters is who holds a key, not how many years have passed. Think about it when occupancy changes hands, when someone who had a key no longer needs one, or when a ring goes missing along with something that shows where you live. Between those moments a well-kept cylinder may need no scheduled care, and when it does, use whatever that cylinder's maker specifies. With the doors already on one recorded system, any repeat is a short piece of work. Lock Rekeying
What about glass beside the door or a window in it?
Glass within reach of the lock is the one case where a plain thumb-turn deserves thought. Options include a captive thumb-turn that turns freely until you remove its small key, laminated glass or a tested security-film system with its specified frame attachment, or simply setting the bolt farther from the glass. Lock manufacturers describe sidelights as a weak point, so the locksmith measures the reach and lays out the choices rather than defaulting to a key on the inside. Deadbolt Installation
What is a reinforced strike, and is it worth adding?
A standard strike is a thin plate held by two short screws in the jamb, and the jamb is what splits when a door is forced. A reinforced strike or strike box is heavier and is fixed with long screws that pass through the jamb into the framing, spreading the load into the structure. It is one of the most effective upgrades on any exterior door and is usually fitted as part of a deadbolt replacement. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Which parts usually need replacing?
Springs, first and foremost: the latch spring, the hub spring that returns the knob, and the small springs on the deadbolt levers. After that, the spindle and knob set screws, a hub whose square has worn round, a worn deadbolt lever or follower, and on later locks the cylinder set screw or the cylinder itself. Bolts, cases and trim are almost always kept, cleaned and refitted rather than replaced. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

Should I change my safe's combination even if it still opens fine?
It depends on who still knows the old one. If a bookkeeper, manager or previous owner who had the combination is no longer with the business, resetting it closes that gap even though nothing about the lock itself has failed. A safe that only the current staff have ever known the code to generally does not need changing on that basis alone. Safe Opening & Combination Change
What information should I have ready before requesting a quote?
Knowing roughly what the safe will store, whether it is a new purchase or an existing unit, and what floor or wall it will sit against covers most of what shapes the visit. If the safe is already on site, its approximate weight and dimensions help too, along with whether it currently has a working lock and combination. An insurer's stated rating requirement, if there is one, is worth mentioning as well. Safe Installation & Servicing
What does key control mean in practice?
It means your key can only be copied through the locksmith who manages your system, after checking that the person asking is on your list of authorised names. Blanks for the keyway are not sold to hardware stores or kiosks while the patent lasts. Each key is numbered and recorded, so you know how many exist. For a home that ends the worry about old copies; for a business it turns a lost staff key into a known, manageable event. High Security Locks

What is a master key system and does a small business need one?
In a master key system each lock accepts its own change key and also a master key above it, so a manager carries one key while staff carry keys that open only their own doors. Small businesses with three or four doors often manage without one. A master earns its place once there are several rooms with different people in them, or several locations, and the owner would otherwise carry a ring of keys. Commercial Rekeying
How is the key chart kept private?
The chart is handed to a named administrator rather than left as loose paperwork, and it is stored somewhere only that person can reach, separate from day-to-day office records. It is not published, circulated widely or kept alongside general building documents. When the administrator role changes hands, custody of the chart moves with a signed acknowledgement rather than being passed along informally. Master Key System Design
Can access control be added to just one door, or does it have to cover the whole building?
A single door with its own standalone reader is a complete installation on its own, and plenty of businesses start there. If more doors need controlling later, a networked controller can be added at that point, or the building can simply add another standalone unit. Nothing about starting small commits the business to expanding, and nothing about a single-door job rules out growing the system later. Access Control Installation
What should I have ready before the visit?
Knowing the intended use of the room, roughly how many people it holds, whether any doors are already fire-rated, and whether any of them are part of a pair helps the locksmith bring the right devices. If a fire inspector or building official has already given a note about the opening, having that note or its reference number on hand keeps the visit focused on what was actually flagged. Car Keys
I am on the shoulder of the highway. Is it safe for you to work there?
It can be, with the routine stranded drivers are given: hazard lights on, out of the driving lanes, and nobody standing on the traffic side. The locksmith parks behind the car as a shield, works from the side away from traffic, and asks you to wait somewhere safe. If the shoulder is too narrow or the traffic too heavy, moving the car a short way to the next exit or lot by tow may be the better order of things. Car Lockout Service
My fob is cracked but still works. Do I need a whole new key?
Usually not. A cracked case often protects a healthy circuit board and transponder, and those can be moved into a new shell of the same pattern with a freshly cut blade. Because the electronics are unchanged, nothing needs programming, and the rebuilt key behaves exactly as before. A new key is the answer when the board is corroded, a button has died or the chip has been damaged. Car Key Replacement
Can a spare be made if the vehicle has an aftermarket alarm or remote starter installed?
Generally yes, though it is worth mentioning any aftermarket system when you call, since a factory immobilizer that has been wired into a third-party alarm or remote starter sometimes behaves differently from the standard setup the locksmith expects. Knowing this in advance lets the visit account for it rather than discovering it partway through programming. Spare Car Key Duplication
What if my vehicle turns out to need dealer-only programming?
Some manufacturers restrict fob programming to a security-gated procedure that only a dealer system or an approved access pathway can complete. When a vehicle falls into that category, the visit identifies it early, explains what the vehicle specifically requires, and documents anything already confirmed, such as a compatible fob, so the eventual dealer visit is not starting the diagnosis over from nothing.
